Oh, how I wish I had done this with my grandma! I had a little tape recorder. But I procrastinated, and now it is far too late! You hit all the high spots of methodology and practice. You have a good, simple instructional blog. Well done. I've done oral histories. I hope your blog will get wide readership and that people will follow through and interview those relatives.

Thank you Caroline! You should always be prepared for those "casual conversations"! Those casual conversations could still turn out to be "interviews". ;)

Genealogical.com published the book, YOUR LIFE AND TIMES, which is a collection of questions that a relative can ask a loved one in order to evoke the listener to share the important events of his/her life. Would you like to see a copy?

Excellent advice as we plan holiday get-togethers with family and FAN club members. May I also suggest that we allow time for older interviewees to answer? Retrieving long-ago memories takes time. Even after the interviewee answers, leave a pause in case there is more to be said before the next question.
