Ancestry has been slowly rolling over everyone, for quite a while now, who does not have a paid subscription to Ancestry or AncestryDNA to new, basic AncestryDNA features, now included with their DNA kits. Since it was little by little at the beginning, not all had noticed. They have now, officially, moved the majority of FREE DNA tools and features behind a paywall, making many quite unhappy. Just what can you get with the purchase of an AncestryDNA kit, now? What has moved over to their new, AncestryDNA Plus paywall, for those that had purchased their kits in the past? See the breakdown of just what’s behind this new paywall, below. Now ONLY Included with AncestryDNA Test Kit
Now Included ONLY with AncestryDNA Plus Membership
Now Included ONLY with Ancestry Family History Membership
And according to Ancestry, any that are associated with family trees or traits are subject to change and may require an Ancestry membership in the future. Food for thought (concerning both sides)

If Ancestry starts becoming like some of the airlines that nickel and dime you for every feature or option they may start losing business on the DNA side. The big take away here is those of us that have been learning how to incorporate genetic genealogy into our research could be losing potential future matches because customers don't want to get sucked into to constantly paying money, when they only wanted to find out their ethnicity and build a small tree (maybe). I keep waiting for some of those brick wall ancestors getting solved by having just the right person take a DNA test. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I think Ancestry could do better by offering a type of "storefront" if they need to develop other features. When they got rid of selling a Family Tree Program I thought that was a huge mistake. I also think them buying up smaller businesses like RootsWeb and shutting them down hurt the genealogical community. I loved the collaboration and message boards that RootsWeb offered. Before you know it FindaGrave will become a paid site since they bought them too. They have a great product/service, I hope they don't make a habit of ruining it all by charging for every little thing. I don't think this affects my subscription currently, however not everyone can afford these pricey subscriptions. Many people give the DNA tests as gifts. They aren't going to do that if they feel Grandma is going to get asked for money every time she looks at her results. These DNA tests are always a potential subscription customer. Parsing all these little charges out is just a big turn off for many.

I agree with the majority of what you have mentioned, but it still comes down to MOST purchasing DNA kits out of curiosity only, so the changes will not affect the majority. ;)

i agree with you Ancestry .com is becoming more and more discriminating to those of us who used the site to find our ancestor's for free. as for me the feature i liked was you were able to add the people that appeared as a protentional ancestors just today i click on a potential ancestor i was met with a dialog box "want to unlock information update to a premium subscription i know i am one person who thinks that this change is stupid beyond belief i don't like it thanks

I agree with most as well, but it still comes down to MOST purchasing DNA kits out of curiosity only, so the changes will not affect the majority. ;)

Thanks for outlining the changes so clearly. I knew they were happening, but haven't as yet checked the severity of them. I understand the need to monetize but find it very disappointing. I hope this isn't the start of more of the free sites such as findagrave leaning towards monetizing. #geneabloggers

I'm somewhat perturbed by Ancestry charging ten bucks more for features they used to offer as part of the paid membership. What they're offering for that ten dollars is pretty much stuff I can do either by hand, or from my genealogy program, with the same information as on Ancestry. Not worth the extra tenner, as I am already paying for the top-level membership, and I'm not made of money. If they continue to demand more and more, I may have to rethink using it at all. Thank you for this information.

I think you are thinking of the ProTools. This is about the DNA paywall. ;)

Thanks for the details. I know they have to turn a profit but it seems like they are taking advantage of long time customers who have already invested a lot of time and money on this site.
