What a fantastic, fun filled, 4-day event of premier genealogical education that was! There were genealogical presentations in such a wide variety of topics, and from so many well-known speakers! With so many presentations going on live at the same time, you had to pick and choose carefully which ones you wanted to see live and right away. I’m not too worried about missing others that I really wanted to hear, because they’ll be available in a couple of weeks from now, until the end of December!
There were a couple that I really wanted to hear but going on at the same time as my own presentations, and others I really wanted to hear but had work. I did get to hear most of the ones I wanted to for Saturday, and I did take a day off work on one of the days for one of my presentations, and I got to hear a couple that I really wanted to hear. I did make it home from work just in time to quickly go over my presentation for the next morning and still be able to hear the Keynote Speaker. Besides the keynote, everything else for the event ended by about 4pm PST. I don’t usually join presentations on methodology, but did join a couple this time, just to hear how others go about their methodology. I did join the presentation on “Using Evidence Analysis in a Timeline to Separate Individuals of the Same Name” by Diana Elder because it also seemed like a good resource, and I LOVE learning about new resources! I learned about so many different charts you can create, and one that really stuck out, was Airtable! I can’t wait to try it out! I also listened to “Proving Long-Lost Family the Indirect Way” by Patti Gillespie, to hear someone else’s method in how they research this topic. It was an interesting take on it. I heard “Climbing to the Summit: Take Your Time so You Don't get out of Breath before you Arrive” by Jean Wilcox Hibben; “Write and Format Your Genealogy in a Research Report” by Lianne Kruger, that included a lot of software quick tips to format faster and create templates; “5 Elements for Sound Research: A Guide to Applying the Genealogical Proof Standard” by Cheri Hudson Passey; and my favorite “Traveling Back in Time Using Google Earth Pro” by Marie Palmer. I use lots of maps, but never knew that Google Earth Pro can layer historical maps with nowadays! It was amazing! I learned so much in that class, and ALL of it was so useful! I can’t wait until I have time to try it out! I also learned about all the different kinds of indexes and how they are all navigated differently, in “A Hop, a Skip, and a Jump: How to Navigate FamilySearch's Browse-Only Collections More Effectively” by Alice Childs; it was very also very useful. Were you able to join the Summit of Excellence genealogy conference this year? If so, what were you able to learn? Do you use timelines for evidence analysis? If so, what types of charts do you use? Have you used Airtable? Do you know how to create quick templates for your genealogy reports, so that you can use the same one and just copy and paste? Do you know all the different kinds of indexes out there and how to use each one? How sound is your research? Are you using the 5 elements? Do you use Google Earth Pro? If so, have you used it to enhance your genealogy research? Did you know that you can layer your maps, add pictures, add text, add videos, add push pins, and so much more! It’s virtually genealogy that you can share with family! Kids will even want to get involved! If you missed the UGA Summit of Excellence this year, don’t worry, there is always next year! 😉 Learn about more fantastic genealogy events, classes and presentations in Genealogy Events. Distinguished genealogical speakers will be giving presentations on a wide range of topics given over a four-day event, from September 14-17, 2022, with 50 lectures in all! On Wednesday, September 14th, they will have a "Basecamp Day". This day is FREE, and will be on beginning genealogy; that will include such topics as introduction to record types, beginning research methods, tools for online research, and more. Thursday, September 15th will include methodology, writing/storytelling, and European research. On Friday, September 16th, there will be presentations on DNA, records, and cultural research. Saturday, September 17th, topics will include more methodology, online research, and immigration and migration. The best thing about a virtual conference is that you can still attend sessions that you’ve missed, and you will have access to the digital recordings of the sessions for several months after! RootsTech 2022 Has Ended, but the Learning Has NotDid you make it to the family history and genealogy event of the year? Wow, RootsTech has certainly done it again! That was a fantastic, fun-filled 3 days! The RootsTech Connect 2022 event, hosted by FamilySearch, has come to an end, but the learning has not. Did you know that you can still access RootsTech? Not only can you access everything in your playlist for a year, the sessions/classes and Expo Hall, but they are keeping your chats available till the 12th (to copy down your info), and you can still access RootsTech Relatives for 3 weeks! So, if you want to view any of the 1,000+ RootsTech Sessions, Keynote Speakers or the Expo Hall, they are all still available, and will continue to be available! Save Your RootsTech Sessions for up to 3 Years: Did you know that you can also save the sessions/classes to your YouTube watch later list, if you think it may be easier to access your classes from YouTube as opposed to going onto the RootsTech platform again and again? Did you also know that if you save them to YouTube that you have access to most of them for 3 years? Just go to the session pin you'd like to save and click on it. From there, on the upper top right corner of the video, you'll see the watch later clock symbol, and just click it. Make sure you are logged into your YouTube account before clicking it, and once you click on it, it will be automatically added to your YouTube watch later list. :) RootsTech Was a Big Hit Again: Did you know that RootsTech Connect 2021 was such a hit going virtual and FREE last year due to Covid, that they went from about 30,000 attendees the year before to 1,000,000, Amazing! I’m not sure how many attended this year, but I do know they broke last year’s record! This was the most fantastic event of the year! They really outdid themselves again with the virtual platform they designed and used starting with last year’s event! Did you know that the most time spent on planning for RootsTech last year, after realizing they needed to go virtual to make it happen due to Covid, was for the platform they were going to use? It took them 2 months checking out different platform companies, before realizing that none of them had what they needed for an event such as theirs, and determined they needed to build their own site for RootsTech! The site for RootsTech was awesome, it was beyond anything I could have imagined! When I first signed up last year, I thought it wasn't going to be that awesome virtually and would be most likely like all the other virtual experiences I had this past year, but boy was I wrong! Not only was the content what made RootsTech last year, but it was their platform that brought it all together and was striking, and made you feel like you were really part of an event! I am so, so glad they went virtual again this year and didn’t waste the platform they had designed! This definitely was the event of the year once again! RootsTech Faves: I absolutely loved everything about RootsTech, from ALL of the keynote speakers, the sessions, the new RootsTech theme song, The Connection activities, the RootsTech Relatives, the Expo Hall, to the chat and more, all of it was fantastic! All the keynote speakers were amazing, but my absolute faves, were the CEO, Steve Rockwood's keynote speech, Maysoon Zayid’s keynote speech, Molly Yeh’s keynote speech, and Azumah Nelson’s keynote speech, as those are the particular speeches and personal stories that resonated with me. My other absolute faves at RootsTech were the cultural dance and food videos/interviews that really brought connection with other cultures around the world, the Facebook Live Daily Wrap Ups with Ancestry.com's Crista Cowan, and chatting with RootsTech relatives! I really hope that they keep this platform for next year (I mean, they spent a lot of time and resources building it, and already have it, so why not?!) and decide doing both an in person event and virtual, then more people from around the world would be able to join, and they may be able to keep close to the amount of attendees they had this year! No one knows for sure that plans yet for next year, but I do know they plan on always having a virtual aspect to it! Don't forget to connect your past, present and future! Connect with your family, friends, strangers, and the world! Connection is what it's all about! If you need help getting started, use some of their suggestions and fun activities to connect with others! So, if you missed the RootsTech Connect 2022 event, you can still view all the classes for FREE! Interactive Questions: I'd love to hear your experience at RootsTech below in the comments!
